On curating: Cathie Boyd

The international artistic curators for the 2022 edition of the festival are Glasgow based Cathie Boyd and Joost Fonteyne from Belgium. We wanted to share a bit more on why they chose the artists they did, so we simply asked them to briefly elaborate on the choices they’ve made. Here are Cathie Boyd’s thoughts on her selection for this year’s festival!

“It’s wonderful for Sonica to be collaborating with GAS Festival again and I’m thrilled that this time I can actually join you on site in Gothenburg. For the 2022 edition of the festival, I’ve selected two works by two Scottish based musicians.

Alex Smoke’s, Creation, gives us a sense of calm after many of us have been through a difficult period during the pandemic.  Smoke has built a seven-string zither which creates gentle harmonics and overtones. The work specifically responds to each unique environment it’s performed in. Sonia Killmann’s Them! There! Eyes? takes us on an audiovisual hallucinatory trip using heavily processed samples of Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of Them There Eyes. I hope these works enable us to escape our everyday lives.”

– Cathie Boyd, Artistic Director
