Contemporary ensemble Mimitabu presents a program of music for ensemble and four channel tape, hexagon screws, square neck screws and hanger bolts, electro-mechanical devices and major sound fetishes in pop-music.

With its strong commitment to commissioning and performing the newest contemporary music, the Gothenburg-based ensemble Mimitabu has quickly established itself as an important voice on the Scandinavian new music scene. Mimitabu wants to expose audiences to a wide spectrum of sounds in unexpected and surprising contexts. The ensemble actively seek out and collaborate with composers and artists who have a genuine and innovative approach towards sound as artistic material. By exploring the full potential of the acoustic instruments and also experimenting with electronics and everyday objects, the arrangement of differentiated sound sources available is infinitely flexible. Mimitabu hopes to improve the depth and sensitivity of the listening experience, both for the audience and for the musicians, thereby reinforcing the connections between artist and audience, and ultimately between humans in general.

About the works

corps étrangers (for six musicians and computer) was written by Joakim Sandgren specifically for Mimitabu and is the third and last piece for sextet and tape in a bigger cycle for fifteen pieces written for solo, trio, sextet and nonet formations and four channel tape. Hanna Hartman’s THE BOILER ROOM is, according to the composer, “Hexagon screws, square neck screws, hanger bolts and roofing nails. Attraction.”. Johan Svensson’s piece ampèrian loops – part III was commissioned by ensemble mosaik and composed 2017. All pieces in the ampèrian loops cycle are written for ensemble and electro-mechanical devices and have computer controlled solenoids as a core element of the music. Sara Glojnarić’s sugarcoating #2 is the second piece in the sugarcoating series, which was initially based on re-adapting major sound fetishes in pop-music, based on data provided by Million Songs Dataset, a freely-available collection of audio features and metadata for a million contemporary popular music tracks.
