Dog Star Orchestra [US]

Contemporary ensemble Dog Star Orchestra blends offbeat performances in out-of-the-way places with traditional concerts, presenting experimental music by young composers and pieces from the experimental tradition.

The Dog Star Orchestra was started in 2005 by Michael Pisaro as a way of playing recent experimental music by young composers and classic pieces from the experimental tradition. Dog Star Orchestra events happen throughout the Los Angeles area and often feature offbeat performances in out-of-the-way places, alongside more traditional concert settings. It is one of the main presenters fostering and documenting the strong local experimental music scene, as well as presenting work that would otherwise not be heard in the US.

The ensemble consist of composer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Corall, whose unique voice finds outlet in accordion orchestras, microtonal electronics, site-specific installations, and inter-disciplinary collaborations. John Eagle is a composer, performer, sound designer, and teacher who explores sound spatialization, harmonic modeling, and different tuning approaches. Julia Holter is a composer, performer, and recording artist. Her interest in the sonic atmosphere has lead her to record in various settings as well as to perform live, often with a focus on the voice. Michael Pisaro is a guitarist and composer known for pieces of long duration with periods of silence. In the past fifteen years his work has branched out, including field recording, electronics, improvisation and large ensembles. Cassia Streb is a violist, improviser and composer. She is active in the field of contemporary and experimental music and performs regularly as a soloist and a chamber musician. Christine Tavolacci is a flutist, composer, and educator specializing in contemporary music. Christine is active as a soloist, improviser, curator and chamber musician and has been involved in the premiere of many new works. Tashi Wada is a composer and performer whose works explore harmonic overtones, resonance, and dissonance through precise tuning and gradual change in pitch.
