About Alex Smoke

Alex Smoke is a musician and composer, operating in various fields of sound including electronic production, sound installation and instrumental composition. For the 2022 edition of Göteborg Art Sounds he presented the piece Creation.

Initially trained in classical cello, drums and singing, then progressing to electronic production under a range of monikers including Wraetlic, Alex has since increasingly focused on sound for picture, psycho-acoustics and collaborations with visual artists and orchestral musicians. His main interest is in combining traditional forms of composition and musicianship with the more experimental approaches allowed by modern technology.

About Creation

For Creation, Alex Smoke draws on the Eastern musical tradition that a performance should respond to its own unique environment, circumstances and audience. He has created a musical instrument: a seven string zither, which generates harmonics and overtones when its strings are played. As the zither’s repeated, amplified notes encircle and flow around his audience, Smoke will use vocals and the chimes of bells to build a spiralling sonic meditation.
